Calling all AoE'ers... [26 Feb 2007|07:20pm]

Hi all,

A lot of you know me already, either personally or from performing with Dark Side Tribal at last July's AoE. In my non-AoE/bellydance life, I'm a PhD student in musicology with a minor in ethnomusicology. Stemming from that, I have a request for any or all of you.

I'm working on a fieldwork study of Axis of Evil this semester. Specifically, I'm interested in examining how AoE, as a recurring music-centered event, has become a kind of community, and how the participants who create that community understand and construct Goth identity (through music, dance, fashion, aesthetics, attitude, and whatever else you think exemplifies Gothiness.) I'll be attending all of the AoE events this semester as part of my fieldwork, but in addition to that, I want to interview AoE participants, to really get at what you, the people of Axis, think.

So I would love to interview you. And you. And you. Organizers, djs, performers, dancers, wallflowers, hardcore regulars, sporadic visitors, all of you. If you identify as Goth outside of AoE, I want to talk to you. If you don't identify as Goth outside of AoE (or even at AoE), I want to talk to you.

I'm happy to chat with anyone and do short interviews at AoE, but since quiet corners are hard to find and I don't want to take up too much of your dancing time, I'd also really like to meet up to do interviews at other times outside of AoE when we'd have a little more time and space to talk.

If you'd like to be interviewed, please drop me a line at ashaffer@gmail.com. And of course, I'll be at Ctrl-Alt-Del tomorrow night (look for hip-length purple/black/green crin falls), if anyone would like to discuss interview possibilities.

Many thanks to you all. See you tomorrow night!

Axis of Evil's first fashion showcase, Control+Alteration+Delineation, is scheduled for February 27th, 2007, 9PM-2AM. The modus operandi of the event is a 'soft reset' of alternative/subculture aesthetic through manipulation of the old-school do-it-yourself mentality and integration of the brand-new and cutting edge.

Seven local designers submitted designs relating to the theme of the darker subcultures (this includes but is not limited to goth, industrial, cyber, punk, dark street fashion, et cetera). Each designer will present his/her creations on the Axis runway! Submitted fashion designs will be juried by a panel comprised of industry and academic professionals and prizes will be awarded.

Dance music will be provided by the Mothertruckin' DJs, Freeze Etch, Nazrin Lorhall, and MC Vicious. Drink specials.

Anybody opposed to me and a few other concerned and geeky individuals starting up a Tri-Omega chapter around Batavia/Aurora IL? We desperately need some good social around here, and initial talks suggest that there's quite a few people around here who might be interested.
As always, advice, comments and ideas are most welcome.

Gothnic! [03 Aug 2006|10:03pm]

[ mood | excited ]

Well, folks, the time has come!

The Tap, now "Jake's," is booked full up in August for their Grand (re)Opening!

So we're having a gothnic (industrialnic/wtfnic) on Saturday, August 26th at 5p at Cascades Park. This will be an all-ages, no alcohol pitch-in. Spend your $20 of Axis drinking money on food everyone can enjoy!

If you last name begins with...
A-D, bring tasty beverages
E-I, bring snacky foods and appetizers and stuff
J-S, sit-down-and-eat-it-on-a-plate / entree style, please
T-Z, bring stuff you can eat off of, drink out of, or wipe your face off with (you have a smudge. There. No, a little up. To the side. Here, let me get it for you). Ooh, and dessert!

Of course, you may e-mail us at the regular place (we have a contact page, use it!) with any questions. Then again, that's what the forums are for!

Invite that intersting person you always see but never have a reason to talk to! This is it! Family is also welcome. What a great time to show your 'other' friends and family that your friends aren't that scary. Name tags provided.

ps - NO BOOZE, you drunkards! This is an all-ages event in a public place, and I will kick you in the gonads if you mess it up. Drink when you get home.

Photoshoot [10 Jul 2006|01:23pm]

So the planned theme of September's Axis will be a TriOmega rush party. This is not set in stone yet, but we're acting like it is anyway.

This means we need themed flyers as well.

Who wants to dress up like gothic cheerleaders and camwhore?

We need at least two girls and one boy. Said boy must we willing to wear short cheerleader skirt (possibly provide his own) and pose in scandelous positions.

I promise this isn't for my own collection.

Really. That site. Those photos. How is it that we're so much cooler than everyone else in the world, anyway?

Attention Tri-Omega Zombie Subcommittee: [13 May 2006|01:52am]

I have been given the Gift of Zombie Prom by Chase this evening. First, he was good enough to cast me in his alleged upcoming film, "Night of the Living Cock-Zombies". Necessarily, this led to all manner of gruesome and rotting discussion. What it ended up coming to in my mind was this: if we're a-gonna do the Zombie Thing, we need a place to end up, somewhere in the downtown area where, ideally, we could both drink and throw brains at each other. (Delicious braaaains...) While I'd prefer someone's spacious backyard, this may not be a possibility. Chase suggested Axis. Anyone care to calculate the odds? They do seem to like us well enough...

And if not for that, then I'm far from opposed to this Zombie Prom notion. I see massive possibilities in it. (Chase seemed to see mainly the possibility of jell-o wrestling, which puts him squarely in crossp's camp.) It might work very well seasonally, and actually attract a fair number of not-us people as well. The idea is in the aether now. I have done my job.

The menu alone makes this Zombie Thing undeniable. It must be discussed. So let us discuss it.

Let's go, Tri-Omega Zombie Squad.

Just a quick question. Feel free to delete if this isn't the appropriate spot to ask!

For those of you who wear BPAL scents, how did you manage to choose a scent? Purely on description alone?

I'm sifting through the scents and have found a few that seem to scream "purchase me now," but I'm wondering if there's a method to the madness.
